Condition B+: staining in top and bottom margins; creases and abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds; pencil notations in upper right margin; wooden dowels at top and bottom; collector's label on verso of linen. Mounted on Chartex. From 1900 through the First World War, Steinlen became more and more politically active, which was reflected in his work. His images on display in 1903 were not the product of a sensitive artist with a penchant for animals, but the work of a committed socialist. Here, in moody tones against an industrial landscape, a workman pauses to proudly survey the work being accomplished. Staring directly into the light of progress, he appears ready to fight for the victory of social rights. This is the version before text.
